Description: An electron micrograph of the developing zebrafish head 3-days post-fertilization with stratified retinas, brain, mouth and olfactory system visible. An optic nerve cross-section can be seen on the righthand side. This is a single electron micrograph taken from a serially-registered image stack collected via serial block-face scanning electron microscopy. The original image was pseudocolored in post on a spectrum ranging from blue (lighter pixels) to red, yellow and finally green (darker pixels). By 3-days post-fertilization the zebrafish retina has largely differentiated, by 4-5 days post-fertilization a visual response is present. At this point, the zebrafish brain is actively undergoing neurogenesis.
